Plasticizers for shotcrete
Purpose:
Plasticizers are essential chemical admixtures used in shotcrete for mining to improve the workability, pumpability, and performance of the concrete mix. In mining applications, shotcrete is widely used for tunnel linings, slope stabilization, and ground support, where the concrete must be applied quickly and efficiently under challenging conditions.
How do inhibitors work?
Plasticizers help achieve these goals by reducing water content, enhancing flowability, and improving the overall quality of the shotcrete.
Types:
Lignosulfonate-Based Plasticizers
Derived from wood pulp. Cost-effective and widely used for general shotcrete applications. Provides moderate water reduction and workability.
Polycarboxylate Ether (PCE)
Based Superplasticizers: High-performance plasticizers. Offers significant water reduction (up to 30%) and excellent workability. Ideal for high-strength shotcrete in demanding mining environments.
Sulfonated Naphthalene Formaldehyde (SNF)-Based Plasticizers
Provides good water reduction and workability. Suitable for shotcrete applications requiring moderate performance.
Modified Lignosulfonates
Enhanced versions of traditional lignosulfonates. Offers better performance than standard lignosulfonates at a lower cost than PCEs.
Application areas:
Tunnel Linings
Plasticizers are used in shotcrete for tunnel linings to ensure smooth application, strong adhesion, and durability in underground mining environments.
Slope Stabilization
Shotcrete with plasticizers is applied to stabilize slopes and prevent rockfalls in open-pit and underground mines.
Ground Support
Plasticizers enhance the performance of shotcrete used for ground support in mine shafts and drifts, ensuring long-term stability.
Ore Passes and Chutes
Shotcrete with plasticizers is used to line ore passes and chutes, providing abrasion resistance and durability.
Repair and Rehabilitation
Plasticizers are added to shotcrete mixes for repairing damaged mine infrastructure, such as walls, floors, and support structures.
Blast-Resistant Structures
Shotcrete with plasticizers is used to construct blast-resistant structures in mining operations, such as storage facilities and entrances.
Water Management Structures
Plasticizers improve the performance of shotcrete used in sumps, pumping stations, and other water management structures in mines.
